A 17th century portrait miniaturen of an unknown Gentleman

£ 2,800

Artist: Nicholas Dixon

Wearing a blue sash over an ochre doublet
Painted on vellum, gilt-metal frame with pierced spiral cresting

Although not seemingly signed the almond shaped eyes are so typical of Dixon's hand during the 1670's. In the 1680's Dixon's work becomes rough and less finished. This may reflect either a decline in standard, or a deliberate attempt to create, like Flatman, a contrasting style to the easy glamour of his earlier court portraiture. Unfortunately he failed to capture the imagination of his clients through this period, he fell into financial difficulties and was forced to mortgage 70 of his miniatures.
