A fine portrait miniature of a Gentleman wearing an embroidered white double with white lace collar and crimson sash, English School, 1616

4.3 cm (1 3/4")
The sitter with auburn hair, moustache and beard
oil on metal
set in the original gold and enamel frame hung with a baroque pearl dated 1616 and further inscribed 22 (possibly the sitter's age)

Because the portrait has been kept secured in the original locket the colours have remained very in good condition. Very few oils were ever signed, this being no exception, but it is nevertheless well executed. The highly embroidered white doublet and gold embossed red sash indicates that the sitter is one of the royal circle.
