Wearing a blue coat, white waistcoat and tied white cravat
signed and dated 1794 on the obverse, set in the original frame, the reverse with gold monogram WJ on blue glass, within plaited hair border

Scouler was the son of an organ maker and music shop keeper. He trained initially at the St Martin's Lane Academy and in 1755 he was awarded a premium by The Society of Arts for a drawing. Scouler threw himself into the London art scene, exhibiting at numerous institutions including the Royal Academy between 1780 and 1787
