A Fine portrait of a fashionable young lady

Artist: Gervase Spencer

wearing gold embroidered blue dress with puff sleeves, white lace ruff collar and matching gold trimmed blue cap
Enamel signed on the reverse
Provenance: The late Mrs. T. S. Eliot

Spencer specialised in painting portrait of women in historical or exotic dress. The fashion for wearing historical dress referring back to Elizabethan portraiture, inspired by the work of Holbein or Van Dyck, was popular throughout the eighteenth century and fuelled by engravings of earlier portraits. The puff sleeves with embroidered bodice, small ruff and cap were fashionable with the ladies of 1560's. The sitter in this miniature is clearly a lady of wealth to be attired in such a lavish costume
