A fine portrait of a Gentleman

Wearing a black doublet, white lawn collar, with shoulder length fair hair, sky background
oil on copper, set in the original splendid gold frame, the reverse with engraved lily within scrolling foliate border

Little is known about this artist except that he is thought to have been Polish or Russian and to have been taught in Sweden by either Alexander of Samuel Cooper. He painted miniatures in oil and on vellum.l He lived in 1660-1670s in England - a fact confirmed by his known miniature portraits of English sitters of which this is a lovely example.
