A full length profile of a Naval officer

Painted on paper Signed and dated 1783 in the distant hills
Set into an ebonised wood frame with gilded inner surround

Wellings's single-figure compositions show him at his very best. In most cases the sitters are men. He spared no trouble to give each figure a setting that was both appropriate and carefully painted. Here the officer's sword denotes a feeling of authority whilst the pointed figure perhaps suggests a man in command. As with many of his outdoor settings Wellings shows the subject almost full-face, with the head in semi-profile. .
