A Gentleman

Wearing a rust coloured coat over a gold edged red waistcoat and white stock
Set in a gold frame with chain border, the reverse with locks of hair tied with split seed pearls on opalescent glass.

Hamilton, the son of an Irish vicar and apprentice of Samuel Dixon in Dublin was employed to colour prints of birds and flowers. He soon turned his attention to miniature painting and exhibited in Dublin, 1765-1773.

As with many miniatures that were executed in the middle of the 18th century this is small and would have been designed to be worn as a piece of jewellery.
