He has brown hair with side whiskers and wears a neatly buttoned dark blue coat over a white cravat
set in the original gold frame, the reverse with seed pearl monogram WS on a blue medallion surrounded with further seed pearls on opalescent glass ground within locks of hair tied with gold wire and seed pearls

Patten exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1819-64. He practised as a miniaturist up to 1830 after which time he turned his attention to life-size oil portraits. In 1840 he was in Germany where he painted a portrait of Prince Albert who appointed him his Portrait Painter in Ordinary.
