A grisaille portrait of a young Gentleman

Artist: Samuel Andrews

in profile to the right, en grisaille with a touch of pink watercolour, set in a gilt-mounted rectangular papier mache frame
Although not signed on the front (this has not been opened) this shows all the characteristics of Andrew's work en Grisaille.

Andrews arrived in Madras in 1791, moving in 1795 to the house previously occupied by John Smart. He was in Calcutta in the later 1790s. John Smart was of great influence to Samuel Andrews and the two men must have shared client commissions as so many of their works relate to each other.
