A portrait miniature of a Noble Lady

Set in a gold frame with bordered reverse

Shirreff was born in Edinburgh where he studied as an artist. Was deaf and dumb from the age of four and made himself understood by signs. He moved to London in 1768, exhibited at the R.A. 1771-1830 and took a keen interest in the stage and many of his sitters were actors and actresses.

In 1795 he applied to go to India (for the second time) and was given permission to go to Benal as a miniature painter. He lived for many years in Madras (the same city in which John Smart had lived and worked during the previous ten years, 1785-95) returning to England in 1809 where he continued to paint in London before retiring to Bath.
