A portrait miniature of an unknown Gentleman

Artist: James Scouler

Wearing brown coat and matching waistcoat, white stock, powdered bag wig
Signed and dated 1772
Set in the original frame
Scouler was born in Edinburgh, the son of an organ builder. He followed his father into this profession but his talent for drawing became apparent at an early age, for at the age of about 15, he won a prize for drawing from the 'Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce'. This must have determined his chosen career, as in London he attended the drawing classes at the St. Martin's Lane 'Academy' run by William Hogarth.
He sometimes signed JS and should not be confused with the miniaturist John Smart - his contemporary. At other rtimes he signed in full as in this example.
