A portrait miniature of an unknown young Gentleman

Artist: Peter Paillou

Wearing a blue coat, white waistcoat and tied white cravat
signed on the obverse and dated 1804, set in the original gold frame, the reverse with locks of hair on opalescent glass

Paillou practised in London for 20 years before moving to Glasgow in 1820, where he charged eight guineas for a miniature and ten guineas for a three quarter length portrait in oils.

Culturally speaking the year in which this miniature was executed, 1804 was quiet eventful. In that year most of the sculptures from the Parthenon, removed under the orders of Lord Elgin, arrived in London. In the same year The Royal Horticultural Society and the Royal Watercolour Society wereformed
