A portrait miniature of George Wilson (died 1821)

Artist: George Chinnery

Wearing black coat and white waistcoat.
Set in the original gold frame, the reverse engraved Sacred/ to the Memory of/ Geo. Wilson, / who departed this life/ the 5th of Feb. 1821/ in his 59th Year/.

Chinnery left Ireland for Madras in 1802 where he became the leading artist of the British Community in India. He stayed there before departing to China in 1825. As George died in 1821 it is likely that this portrait was taken circa 1815 in India. In the Asiatic Journal and Monthly Miscellany Vol. 4, for the year 1835 is recorded that a Mrs Wilson, widow of the late George Wilson Esq., of the H.E.I. Company's Civil Service, Madras Establishment, married Lt. T. Wing of the Royal Navy. It is probable that the Mrs. Wilson referred to in the Journal was related to the present sitter.
