A portrait of a Gentleman set into a navette shaped gold ring

Artist: John Donaldson

Wearing a white waistcoat finely embroidered in gold, brown coat and white cravat, his powdered hair en queue
set in a navette shaped ladies gold ring surrounded with pearl border

Marcia Pointon, the art historian, has pointed out the fashion for wearing miniatures close to the body, whether around the neck or waist or on the wrist or finger was revived by Queen Charlotte soon after her marriage to George III and after his coronation in 1760. Such a high profile act made the wearing of miniatures immensely fashionable and must have given considerable encouragement to portrait miniaturists and jewellers in London and elsewhere. Whilst many which were set into bracelets have survived today, fewer rings seem to exist now.
