A strong portrait miniature of a Gentleman

Artist: John Donaldson

he wears a blue coat with gold buttons, white waistcoat and large frilled cravat, his powdered hair en queue
Set in the original gold frame with bright-cut border

John Donaldson was born in Edinburgh in 1737, and distinguished himself as a miniature painter, both in enamel and water-colours. In the year 1764, and again in 1768, he obtained the premium given by the Society of Arts for the best picture in enamel. A characteristic of his hand is the strong delineation of the facial features, particularly noticeable in the eyebrows.
