Nutt was born in the Isle of Man, where her father Thomas Harwood Nutt was a farmer. Her mother was Elizabeth Crabtree Styring, after whom she was named. Besides studying in Sheffield school of art she also trained at Newlyn under Stanhope Forbes. She became an art teacher and emigrated to Canada in 1919, a year after this portrait was taken. She became Principal at the Nova Scotia College in 1927, a position she held for 20 years. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1909.
