An early 17th century portrait miniature of a Gentleman with beard and moustache

Artist: Peter Oliver

Signed with gold monogram PO on the obverse, bodycolour on vellum
He wears a wide lace van Dyck collar, red sash over damascened armour, set in later gilt-metal frame with pierced scrolling border

Peter the eldest son of Isaac Oliver, a French born English portrait painter, trained in his father's studio but developed his own softer style. As a miniature painter, Peter was in demand both inside and outside royal circles of his day. The presence of the orange sash across the sitter's right shoulder would indicate however that the sitter is likely to be of Courtly status.
