An enchanting portrait of Thomas De La Garde Grissell, Junior (born 1851)

Thomas De La Garde Grisell Junior was the son of Thomas Grisell (1801-74) and his wife Eliza, daughter of Edward Leathes The sitter's father, Thomas Grisell, was a builder and built the following public buildings : The Reform, Conservative and Oxford and Cambridge Club Homes; English Opera and French Theatres, Nelson Column and the New Houses of Parliament under Sir Charles Barry.
Having been responsible for building some prestigious sites,Thomas's wealth would have enabled him to afford having his son, painted by Easton who was in turn patronised by the Royal Family. There is a large sarcophagus of cast iron and stucco in West Norwood Cemetery, Lambeth, where the sitter's grandfather and grandmother are buried.
Reginald Easton began his career as an engraver but later took up painting portraits in miniature and watercolour. He excelled at painting children as this portrait clearly demonstrates.
