Engleheart's work can be divided into three stages, early works, circa 1775, - of which this is an exceptional example - which are small in size and often show the use of a brown/grey background, the middle examples, 1780-1795, where Engleheart developed his very distinctive style, with his draughtsmanship and use of colour becoming consistent and high quality, and the last period where he sometimes adopted the rectangular format and his miniatures were generally larger in scale.
