An officer of the 2nd (Royal North British) Dragoons, later known as the Royal Scots Greys

in scarlet coat with black collar, gold frogging and epaulettes
Signed and dated on the backing card A. Gallaway pinxt. Edinr 18 Broughton/place 1813
gilt-metal frame

Provenance: Collection of the late T.S. Eliot

This is a rare depiction of an important regiment, which gained fame and glory two years later at Waterloo. He wears the dress coat, as opposed to the more commonly seen undress jacket worn on campaign, and for most non full dress occasions.

Although he was clearly an excellent miniaturist, Gallaway's works are relatively scarce. His sitters varied greatly – from the emerging Scottish middle classes to personalities such as the actor Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Other examples of his work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
