An unknown Gentleman

Artist: James Scouler

Signed with monogram on the obverse and dated 1764, the reverse inscribed This Paper must not be taken off, 1764, in the original turned wood frame.
Scouler was born in Edinburgh the son of an organ maker and music shopkeeper. He embarked on his initial training at the St Martin's Lane Academy and in 1755 he was awarded a premium by the The Society of Arts for a drawing. He threw himself into the London art scene, exhibiting at numerous institutions including the Royal Academy between 1780-87.
Scouler painted crayon and miniature portraits and the majority of his works are of small dimensions and his best examples of precise stipple brushwork is sometimes confused with other great artists of the period, including  John Smart (1742/3-1811)
