An unknown Girl

Artist: Thomas Redmond

Wearing a black cap, lace-trimmed blue dress and blue necktie
Set in the original gold bracelet clasp frame

Redmond was apprenticed to a house painter in Bristol but soon forsook this trade in order to study art in London. He followed his painting career in Bath, but also exhibited at the Society of Artists 1762-71 and at the R.A. 1775-83.

A feature of miniature painting in the period 1740 to 1775 - in common with the other arts - was its unpretentiousness and lack of ostentation, reflected not only in the sitter's appearance and character, but also in the size of the miniature iteself.

This is charming and delightful portrait by Redmond.
