Frederick Buck (1771-1840) worked in Cork. During the Peninsula war, when Cork was a busy port of embarkation of troops, Buck had so many orders for portraits of officers and others going to the seat of war that he kept a supply of partly-painted ivories to which he added the heads and the regimental facings, etc., when his customers gave him hurried sittings. This example does not fall into this hurried approach but shows compassion and intimacy, suggesting the sitter was close to Buck.
