An unknown lady of the Shannon family

Artist: Thomas Leeming

the sitter stands before a column and landscape background, holding a pink flower. The position of her arms across her stomach might suggest she is with child

There is very little information known about Leeming who was possibly born in Lancashire circa 1788. His earliest known miniatures was painted in 1809 of Lieutenant Bateson, when he was 21 years old. Between 1811 and 1822 he exhibited 23 paintings at the Royal Academy of which only one painting seems to have survived. By 1819 he had become an accomplished miniature painter a fact that is substantiated by the competence displayed in the present rare surviving work.
