An unknown officer, possibly of the Artillery Company of the Newport Loyal Volunteers, c.1798

Artist: Buncombe

Wearing blue coat with gold buttons, white sash with gold plate engraved GR, gold epaulette, and black fur trimmed hat decorated with blue and yellow tartan
painted on card, the reverse with remnants of Buncombe signature and address Newport Isle of Wight
Set in a turned pear wood frame

A print of the View of the town (of Newport) with the Volunteers on their march to be received by the Right Honble. General Sir Wm. Pitt K.B. on the 29th July 1798, shows the artillery company wearing a blue uniform with the officers in a similar fur crested helmet as depicted in this profile.

This appears to be an early example of Buncombe's hand before he develops his style as we know it.
We are grateful to Mr. C. Bryant for his help in identifying the uniform worn by the sitter.
