Gervase Spencer

Gervase Spencer (Died 1763)

Spencer was a gentleman's servant .Having copied a miniature successfully, he was encouraged to take up painting and became a fashionable miniature painter.rrSpencer established his practice in London, presumably through newspaper advertisements and word of mouth; his earliest miniatures date from about 1745. By the 1760s aspiring miniaturists were, in contrast to Spencer's generation, taking lessons with established miniaturists. Henry Spicer and Carwardine were amongst his pupils.
