Roche was both deaf and dumb. He practised as a miniature painter at Dublin in 1784, but may have been in England before then. His sitter's usually have an incipient smile or smirk; other characteristics of his miniatures are the shading under the eyes and the definite outlines to nostrils, lips etc.
