A portrait miniature of an unknown fashionable young Gentleman

Artist: John Smart

3.2 cm (1 1/4")
wearing rust coloured doublet secured with jewelled buttons, a fine white lace Van Dyck style collar and blue robe over his right shoulder.
Signed with initials on the obverse and dated 1765, set in the original gilt-metal frame

Although it has not been possible to identify the sitter here was clearly a man of wealth who followed the "Cavalier" fancy-dress costume called a Van Dyke, which was popular during the reign of George III.
