A self-portrait of the artist as a young man

£ 3,000

Artist: Thomas Richmond

REF
5303
Height
5 cm (1 1/1")
in profile to the left wearing a dark green coat, white waistcoat and tied stock
stamped ormolu mount, the reverse with label inscribed: My father/ by himself/ G. Richmond and with Engleheart Exhibition label

From the reverse of the miniature, it can be seen that the present lot stayed within the artist's family for several generations. The label is inscribed by his younger son, George (1809-1896), who was famous in his own right as a painter and youthful member of the "The Ancients", who painted visionary landscapes. It would appear that the Dr. R.T.Richmond who loaned the present portrait to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1929 was probably Thomas' great-grandson.
