A fine portrait miniature of a Lady wearing blue hat trimmed with yellow ribbon

Artist: Frederick Buck

7 cm (2 3/4")
Set in a gilt-metal frame

Frederick Buck, the younger brother of Adam Buck, practised miniature painting in Cork for a long time at the end of the 18th century. During the Peninsula war, when Cork was a busy port of embarkation of troops, Buck had so many orders of portraits of officers and others gong to the seat of war that he kept a supply of partly painted ivories to which he added the heads other regimental features . Many of his miniatures are poor and hard in quality - this portrait seems to be painted with extreme care and passion - the suggestion being that perhaps the sitter was one very close to his own heart (his wife perhaps).
