A plumbago drawing of Mary Skene, Lady Alexander Duff, wife of 3rd Earl of Fife

£ 1,800

Artist: James Ferguson

8 cm (3 1/4")
Standing three quarter length in a mountainous landscape holding a flower, swallows fly in the sky
indian ink on vellum, set in the original turned wood frame inscribed with the sitter's name indistinctly on the reverse and the number 3

This is an unusual work in that Ferguson has chosen to depict a large estate and landscape background - when usually his backgrounds are blank. The drawing is likely to have been commissioned to celebrate Mary's marriage to Alexander Duff, 3rd Earl Fife, August 1775 at Carriston, Angus Scotland. This may be one of the last drawings by Ferguson who died in 1776.
