Lady Grace Boyle (1723-1763), Countess of Middlesex

Artist: Nathaniel Hone

on enamel, signed and dated, in gold frame with the sitter's details engraved on the reverse

Nathaniel Hone RA (1718-1784) was the leading Irish miniaturist of his generation. He painted this very fine example in 1752. He was in London for most of that year but came to Dublin in July and stayed in Lucan.

Lady Middelsex was born Lady Grace Boyle of Shannon Park, Carraigaline, County Cork, the daughter and heiress of the 2nd Viscount Shannon (a second cousin of the 1st Earl of Shannon) and wife of the 8th Earl of Middlesex.

Unusually for Hone he shows the sitter in profile wearing a timeless and historicised costume with large pearl earrings and a strand of pearls in her hair.

On the death of the Countess of Middlesex her estate came into the possession of the Earls of Shannon when this miniature became part of the collection.
