signed with initials on the obverse and dated , set in the original gold frame with engraved reverse and split pearl border
Richard was the son of John Webb Esq. of Gowerlands. A Lieutenant in the 9th Regiment of Foot, Richard was fatally wounded in a skirmish between British and French forces in 1779, resulting in his premature death aged just twenty-four years old. This portrait was painted posthumously after a small oil portrait taken in 1790.
Gallaway was a Scottish artist about whom little is known. He exhibited at the Society of Artists, Edinburgh, 1808, where he is known to have been working up until 1812. His miniatures are well painted and his work is scarce .
