Lord George was the only son of George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield and his wife The Hon. Anne Elizabeth Forester. He became a soldier and was raised to Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards. After retiring in 1855 he sat in the House of Commons and House of Lords. He played cricket and was the founding member of and the first President of the Derbyshire County Cricket Club. In 1871 he stayed at Londesborough Lodge, with among others, the Prince of Wales. Both he and the Prince contracted typhoid, whilst the Prince recovered George died of his illness.
Lady Evelyn, George's sister, (1834-75) married Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon, in 1861. Henry was Secretary of State for the Colonies twice and served as Lord Lt of Ireland.
