The guitar Maria is holding is a guitar made by Christian Frederick Martin (1796–1873), circa 1843, which is is the earliest datable guitar with prototype versions of X-bracing supporting the guitar's top. Christian Friedrich Martin, Sr., the talented and industrious immigrant from Germany who became America's first major guitar maker. He was founder of top international guitar maker C.F. Martin & Co. An Exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tuesday, June 3, 2014, features this guitar.

Born in Spain, Maria achieved great success in her native country, France, and England before arriving to acclaim in New York in 1840.
