Portrait of Eleonore Princess of Liechtenstein (1812-1873)

Artist: Robert Theer

signed and dated R.Th. 1830

Eleonore was the daughter of Moritz Josef Prinz von und zu Liechtenstein (1775-1819). In 1830 she married Johann Adolf II, Fürst zu Schwarzenberg (1799-1888). One of their seats was at Český Krumlov. Inspired by several visits to England with her husband she remodelled their baroque palace Hluboká in the style of the English Tudor Gothic.
Theer was a renowned Viennese portraitist and lithographer of the early 19th century. In 1820 together with his family he moved to Vienna, where he studied at the Academy under Eduard Klieber. He was also trained by miniaturist Moritz Michael Daffinger. At the age of 16 years he opened his own studio and from 1828 till 1846 regularly showed his works at the annual academy exhibitions in Vienna. He soon became a very popular miniaturist of the Vienna high society and court.
