In 1758 a few months before the invention attributed to Monsieur de Silhouette, Dorothy Bradshaigh was creating remarkable precise shaded portraits in blue set against a white background. The roots of the hair the eyelashes, the corners of the lips are all reproduced to the meticulous degree .

Dorothy was the daughter of William Bellingham and his wife Elizabeth Spencer, widow of Robert Hesketh (d.1697). Her sister Elizabeth, shared with Dorothy the Hesketh estate at Rufford with their stepsister Elizabeth Hesketh, the future Countess of Derby. Elizabeth married Sir Robert Echlin and like Dorothy she corresponded with Samuel Richadson.

Lady Bradshaigh was Samuel Richardson's most prolific and important correspondent, challenging him about a range of issues, literary and otherwise, including his intentions for Clarissa and Sir Charles Grandison, in an iconoclastic style. Samuel Richardson (1689-1761), was the renowned English novelist and master printer, and was also a prolific letter writer.

Edward Haytley painted a full-length portrait of Sir Roger and his wife in the garden of Haigh Hall in 1746, which was sold at Sotheby's in 1981 and is now situated in Haigh Hall (owned by Wigan Borough Council).
